Statistics: Helping Women Find Healing After Abortion
Healing Begins with Understanding
In the United States, 1 in 4 women will have an abortion by the age of 45. For many of these women, the aftermath brings unexpected emotional struggles—guilt, depression, and shame that can feel overwhelming. But there is hope, and there is healing.
The Need is Greater Than Ever
While 63% of people seek emotional support after an abortion, 82% don’t know where to go to find healing. Most won’t turn to the church due to fear of judgment. They’re searching for a safe place where they can process their experience without condemnation.
Today’s landscape has changed dramatically. Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly choosing the abortion pill because they can acquire it easily by mail, even in states where abortion is illegal, like Alabama.
Currently, 80% of abortions are from the abortion pill, and 85% of women using it will experience at least one adverse reaction. 67% of women experience suicidal thoughts after abortion. They are often left in emotional turmoil with nowhere to turn.
How We’re Making a Difference
Our abortion recovery programs accomplish three vital tasks:
Helping Women Heal
First, we reach out to individuals who are hurting and struggling to move forward in their lives. We remind them that it’s ok to not be ok after an abortion, while providing practical tools to overcome guilt, depression, and shame so they can be more productive and raise healthy families.
Breaking Cycles
Second, we are breaking the cycle of repeat abortions. This is critical when you consider that 1 out of every 2 abortions is a repeat abortion. Once women go through our program, they rarely choose abortion again. In fact, our success rate is 98%.
Building Relationships
Most importantly, because these participants return to us at least 11 times, we have the chance to build genuine relationships and effectively share the gospel of Jesus Christ. These aren’t just program statistics—they’re transformed lives.
Our Journey Since 2011
Together, we’ve achieved significant progress since our inception in 2011.
We have grown from offering one program once a year to three programs, twice a year. We have trained 52 facilitators, with 21 still actively serving women across the country.
Cindy Harless founded Abortion Recovery America out of a deep calling to bring healing and hope to women affected by abortion. Having experienced guilt, shame, and grief from her own abortion, Cindy encountered God’s emotional and spiritual touch 12 years later through a pregnancy resource center. With over 30 years of dedication to Pro-Life ministries, she provides compassionate leadership and extensive experience. Cindy’s mission is to comfort, strengthen, and encourage others with the same mercy, help, and comfort that God has extended to her regarding her abortion experience.
Through Abortion Recovery America, women find restoration through intensive recovery groups, both in-person and virtual. The ministry offers multiple sessions each season, including drop-in groups, ensuring that women have access to support whenever they need it. Cindy’s personal journey from pain to healing gives her a unique and heartfelt understanding of the struggles women face. She is committed to creating a safe, loving environment where women can experience God’s grace and find renewed hope.

Why We Went National
We are thrilled to announce that Abortion Recovery Alabama is now Abortion Recovery America! That’s right—we went NATIONAL!
While offering our Bible studies via Zoom, we had people reaching out to us from Washington DC to California. Women from across the country were finding us, desperate for the healing and hope we offer. Recognizing that the need is great all across America, we knew we had to expand our reach.
